It mostly depends on where you work at, but probably more if you or the government can pay them to keep you. As a student, I got work study, which is a form of financial aid that pays 70% of my wages. Sadly, as soon as I was ineligible for work study in some jobs, they wouldn't keep me on even though I was the most productive member of the team.
They refuse to pay over time, so don't even think about getting anywhere with that. If you try, there is a mountain of paperwork that you have to fill out before you can get the money. Holiday pay is a hell no as well, so if you work in a lab around the holidays, you aren't going to get more for it.
Working with professors is probably more annoying than anything, but this is because they have the "I got a Ph.D." syndrome. They have little to no management skills, so if you work with them on a project, you are pretty much on your own figuring it out. If you get it wrong, even if they haven't helped you, it is hell trying to straighten out the mess.
Bonus to working with a professor on a project is that you can set your own schedule. This is not necessarily true if you work for a library, or other such places on campus.
