The only good thing I can say about the Cracker Barrel Gift Shop is that before I worked there, I thought it was awesome - wonderful selection of merchandise & greeting cards - everytime I ate at the restaurant, I looked forward to shopping there. When I was hired, the retail manager (Don) seemed happy to have me there & pleased with my work. The fact that I was age 70 didn't seem to be an obstacle & there were several other seniors working in the retail/cashier area. When Don left around Easter 2011, there was a drastic change in management's attitude. All of a sudden, I didn't have enough product knowledge & poor training was no excuse - I should have automatically known to ask questions about things I didn't even know I had to know. The kicker was that I "wasn't smiling enough & making the shopping experience pleasant for the guests". I'm a VERY friendly person, but Stepford Wife women turn me off & I knew if I were like that, it would turn off a lot of senior guests. I was first put on a probationary basis until I showed improvement, then finally demoted because I still didn't meet their "standards". Finally, I was so frustrated that I resigned - my best was just not good enough for them & it was no longer a pleasurable experience working there.
