Company: Wegmans In New York

Wegmans is an upscale grocery store chain that has its roots in Rochester, NY. It has approximately 80 stores throughout NY, PA, VA, MD, and is now building in MA.

For customers, the stores are great. Amazing selection, great service, and an appealing atmosphere. As an employee, it isn't all that great. Oddly, Wegmans has been rated as one of the best companies to work for 13 years in a row. One has to wonder just how that rating was created.

I work at one of the stores in VA. There is a definite hierarchy of employees. 1) Employees who have worked a Rochester-area store and transferred to the hinterlands (VA/MD). 2) Full-time employees, and lastly (3) part-time employees. The managers all came from Rochester stores; some by choice and some were demoted. For those who were demoted, working in a non-Rochester store is like being sent down to the minor league. Those managers are eager to prove themselves so they can get back to the major league. To prove themselves they'll run their employees ragged and backstab other managers.

One common problem is an inability to communicate. Managers will make a policy change and then verbally inform a few employees. The word disseminates slowly and unevenly, causing confusion and sometimes abandonment of the new policy. Every one I know has been reprimanded for failing to heed a new policy we've never heard of before.

The hourly pay for part-timers is good, and we are eligible for raises every six months. Sundays are time and a half. However it is a rare part-timer who can make the leap to full time. Management is reluctant to hire full-timers. Most part timers have 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet.

They tease part-timers with supposed benefits but to get those benefits you must have worked many hours in the previous year. As you approach your anniversary they cut your scheduled hours!

If you work 4 or more hours in a shift you get a 10 minute break. 10 minutes is barely enough time to hit the restroom and get a drink.
